Criminal Records: Periods & Disclosure

By Adv. Yechiel Rachamim Menahemov & Adv. Assaf ShpigelPublished:

The practical dilemma

An old conviction raises concerns about public employment or a government tender. Will it remain relevant indefinitely?

The legal position

The Criminal Information and Rehabilitation Law 2019 took effect on 12 July 2022 and replaced the former register law. Limitation and expungement periods depend on age, conviction, sentence and other factors. Expungement mainly restricts permitted disclosure and use, with exceptions; it is not necessarily physical destruction. Employer demands and declarations are legally constrained, as is use by authorised recipients. Official source 1 Official source 2

Your next step

Review information through the permitted channel and gather conviction and sentence dates. Calculate the applicable periods and check the requesting body’s authority. Do not provide a broad declaration or record printout solely because a form requests it.
